Waste Managment Groups

Northern Ireland faces enormous challenges over the next few years as it strives to build the waste infrastructure necessary to ensure compliance with the European Union Directive targets for minimising the use of landfill to handle Biodegradable Municipal Waste. Currently, each of the twenty-six councils in Northern Ireland hold responsibility for the collection, treatment and disposal of household municipal wasteand have arranged themselves into three strategic Waste Management Groups to deliver and implement regional Waste Management Plans. With support from central government through the waste Programme Delivery Support Unit, the three Waste Management Groups are taking forward the procurement of infrastructure to meet the needs of their constituent councils. The three Waste Management Groups are as follows:

  • arc21 is one of three waste management groups in Northern Ireland representing 11 councils in the east of the Province, these are: Antrim, Ards, Ballymena, Belfast, Carrickfergus, Castlereagh, Down, Larne, Lisburn, Newtownabbey and North Down.
  • North West Region Waste Management Group represents voluntary grouping of seven local authorities in Northern Ireland. These are: Coleraine Borough Council (BC); Ballymoney BC, Derry City, Limavady BC, Magherafelt District Council (DC), Moyle DC and Strabane DC.
  • Southern Waste Management Partnership (SWaMP2008) comprises eight local authorities. These are: Armagh City and District Council; Banbridge District Council; Cookstown District Council; Craigavon Borough Council; Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council; Fermanagh District Council; Newry and Mourne District Council; and Omagh District Council.
