21 December 2011

The Christmas Recycler of the Month winner is Rodney Carroll from John F Kennedy Park in Bessbrook. The competition sponsored by the Department of the Environment’s (DOE’s) Rethink Waste campaign in partnership with Newry and Mourne District Council, rewards householders who use their recycling bins correctly with £50.

Rodney’s blue bin was full of recyclables including clean plastic containers, bottles, cans, paper and cardboard. Rodney finds that using his blue bin correctly has drastically reduced the amount of waste in his black bin. He and his family also recycle their glass, large cardboard boxes and textiles at the Chapel Road Household Recycling Centre.

The range of materials that can be placed in the blue bin has been expanded to include clean plastic trays and containers for example yoghurt and margarine tubs, fruit and meat trays and the inside of biscuit tins. As well as all types of paper and magazines, cardboard, aluminium and steel cans/ boxes, clean foil containers, empty aerosols and plastic bottles.

This month’s officer was delighted to find that the majority of bins set out contained the right materials and encourages residents to continue to recycle over the Christmas holidays. However, householders are reminded that for health and safety reasons plastic bags, food waste and glass cannot be recycled, in the blue bin.
