The Waste Discovery Truck rolled into town this week! The truck, which aims to educate the public on how to reduce, reuse and then to recycle their waste, was welcomed by Mayor Councillor Charlie Casey as it made its first stop at Newry Household Recycling Centre.

The state-of-the-art truck  has been purchased jointly by the eight  member Councils of the Southern Waste Management Partnership (SWaMP2008) with support from the DOE’s Rethink Waste Campaign , will cover areas of the SWaMP district, including Newry and Mourne.

Mayor Charlie Casey welcomed the truck’s arrival saying “It’s  good to see the waste education truck coming to Newry and Mourne. It will be a very valuable educational resource which will greatly benefit the Council in its efforts to get all residents to recycle and reduce even more of their waste and therefore  ensure less waste ends up in our landfill site.”

The Waste Discovery Truck will visit Camlough HRC on the 17th October, Kilkeel HRC on the 20th October as well as making two visits to the car park adjacent Bagenal’s Castle on the 22nd and 24th October to link up with the Castle’s annual Halloween school and family fun events.

Council staff will be on hand to advise members of the public on the blue and brown wheelie bin scheme and answer any questions they may have about waste and recycling, as well as offering tips on how to reduce waste.
